What is Texture?

Texture is a substance that is denser than paint but not as heavy as drywall compound. The textured surface introduces small shadows due to its unevenness, which can fade under direct sunlight but become more pronounced as light sources move nearer to the wall. Consequently, this effect can make the overall color of the wall seem a bit darker.

Texturing is particularly effective at concealing imperfections like noticeable cracks, bulges, or other defects in the surface. Additionally, texture dries quickly, allowing painting to commence just a few hours later.

Knockdown

Knockdown texture has become a popular choice for residential ceiling construction and renovation. This technique involves spraying drywall product onto the ceiling to create formations that resemble stalactites in a cave. The texture is then flattened or "knocked down," resulting in a sleek and modern appearance. It effectively conceals imperfections in poorly installed or aging drywall. However, it's important to note that matching knockdown texture for repairs is challenging. Even skilled installers may find it difficult to seamlessly repair this texture, and the areas of repair will often be noticeable.

Orange Peel

Commonly referred to as "Splatter Coat," Orange peel texture offers a subtler aesthetic compared to knockdown yet remains visually appealing. It is applied similarly to knockdown but skips the final troweling step. Typically, the product is sprayed more finely, lending a gentler and less pronounced character to the room. However, preferences for the size and thickness of the application can vary, just as with other textures.

Swirl

Swirl finishes on drywall add a unique decorative touch to walls and ceilings, creating a pattern of circular swirls that can be either subtle or pronounced based on the technique used. This texture is achieved by applying a thick layer of drywall product and then using a brush or comb to form swirling patterns while the product is still wet. The swirl technique offers a customized look that can vary widely, making each application distinct. Although it can be more labor-intensive compared to simpler finishes, the artistic and aesthetic appeal of swirl finishes makes them a popular choice for adding character and depth to a room. This type of texture not only enhances the interior design but can also help in concealing imperfections in the underlying surface.

Smooth

While a popcorn ceiling might make a room feel outdated and dim, a smooth texture can create a sense of cleanliness and brightness. This effect is achieved by applying a layer of drywall product over the entire ceiling and wall surface. Once it dries, the surface is meticulously sanded to achieve a uniform, smooth appearance. Many people don't realize that achieving a flawless smooth finish is an art that requires either significant time and multiple attempts or the expertise of a highly skilled painter. Although a smooth texture is more expensive than knockdown due to the greater amount of material and labor required, its sleek look is unparalleled. Benefits include enhancing the room's light, providing an ultra-modern aesthetic, and easy matching for any necessary repairs. However, the drawbacks include higher costs and difficulty in execution. If the ceiling surface is uneven, these imperfections will be difficult to conceal and likely visible with a smooth finish.

Skip Trowel

The skip trowel texture is achieved by applying a thin coat joint compound across the entire wall or ceilings. This texture can help hide imperfections in drywall. Similar to knockdown texture, skip trowel texture has wider spacing and imitates a stuccoed surface.
